What is Molecular Iodine?
To truly understand molecular iodine, it's important to realize that iodine is a broad term referring to many different species of iodine. For instance, povidone iodine, has approximately 30,000 parts per million (ppm) of total iodine. However, of the 30,000 ppm there are only 3 ppm of molecular iodine. It is only the molecular iodine with the povidone iodine that is responsible for its efficacy.

A landmark article published by researchers in 2016 (Biocontrol Science, Vol. 21, No. 1, 21-27) determined that the efficacy of povidone iodine was dependent upon the concentration of molecular iodine present. The study determined that povidone iodine in its most potent concentration, contains less than 5 ppm of molecular iodine.

Molecular iodine is the only efficacious species of iodine and Iotech International's molecular iodine products have 20 to 40 times more molecular iodine than the most effective povidone iodine solutions available, while having less total iodine.
